10 Skincare Habits You Need to Change Right No

1. Over-Cleansing or Under-Cleansing

Cleansing is the most basic step in any skincare routine. But over-cleansing or under-cleansing can cause more harm than good.

  • Over-Cleansing strips your skin of its natural oils, which protect and hydrate it. This can lead to dryness and irritation.
  • Under-Cleansing allows dirt and bacteria to build up, leading to acne and dullness.

Solution: Use a gentle cleanser that maintains your skin’s natural pH balance. Cleanse twice a day for balanced and healthy skin.

2. Using the Wrong Products for Your Skin Type

Many people use products without understanding their skin type, which can worsen skin problems.

  • For oily skin, using heavy cream-based moisturisers can clog pores and increase oiliness or acne.
  • For dry skin, gel-based products can make your skin even drier.

Solution: Identify your skin type (oily, dry, combination, or sensitive) and choose products that cater to your specific needs for better results.

3. Skipping Sunscreen

One of the most common skincare mistakes is neglecting sunscreen. Sun exposure is a significant cause of ageing, pigmentation, and even skin cancer.

Solution: Always apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily, regardless of whether you’re indoors or outdoors. Reapply it every 2–3 hours for continuous protection. Sun protection is essential in every season, rain or shine.

4. Over-Exfoliating or Not Exfoliating Enough

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells for a fresher, glowing complexion. However, too much or too little can harm your skin.

  • Over-Exfoliating damages your skin’s protective barrier, leading to redness, inflammation, and irritation.
  • Skipping Exfoliation results in dead skin build-up, which causes dullness.

Solution: Exfoliate gently 1–2 times a week using a mild exfoliant for healthy, radiant skin.

5. Using Too Many Products at Once

More isn’t always better when it comes to skincare. Using multiple products like serums, creams, oils, and masks simultaneously can cause irritation, breakouts, or product inefficacy.

Solution: Follow a minimal routine. Stick to a cleanser, moisturiser, and sunscreen for the essentials, and add products based on your skin’s specific needs.

6. Not Removing Makeup Properly

Leaving makeup on overnight or not cleansing properly after makeup can clog pores and lead to acne. Using wipes alone often leaves residue behind.

Solution: Use a proper makeup remover like cleansing oil, followed by a gentle cleanser, to ensure your skin is thoroughly clean.

7. Not Drinking Enough Water

Hydration is crucial not just externally but internally as well. Dehydrated skin appears dull, and fine lines become more noticeable.

Solution: Drink 8–10 glasses of water daily to keep your skin hydrated and glowing.

8. Neglecting Your Neck and Hands

While focusing on the face, people often forget their neck and hands, which are equally exposed to environmental damage.

Solution: Include your neck and hands in your skincare routine. Apply moisturiser and SPF to these areas for consistent care.

9. Popping Pimples

It’s tempting, but popping pimples can worsen inflammation, increase the risk of infection, and leave scars.

Solution: Be patient and use acne treatments or consult a dermatologist for professional advice rather than popping pimples.

10. Avoiding Moisturiser for Oily Skin

Many believe that oily skin doesn’t need moisturiser, but this is a myth! Skipping hydration can lead your skin to produce even more oil to compensate.

Solution: Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser to hydrate your skin without clogging your pores.
